A bandhgala closes at the collar and holds a sharp, structured line. Rare Rabbit tailors this classic in jacquard, embroidery and clean solids, so you look put together at a wedding, a festive dinner or a formal evening. Pick your colour, pick your fabric, and build the rest of the outfit around it.
The bandhgala began in the royal courts of Jodhpur and never left the Indian wardrobe. Its closed mandarin collar sets it apart from a western blazer and gives it a formal, upright character. Over time it moved from palace halls to wedding stages, boardrooms and award nights, and it now sits among the most versatile pieces a man can own. Rare Rabbit brings this heritage into the present. We cut each bandhgala with a slim, modern fit, finish it with tonal buttons and clean seams, and keep the silhouette sharp from collar to hem. The result is a jacket that respects tradition and still looks current in every photograph.
Three details define the bandhgala. First, the high closed collar, which frames the face and removes the need for a tie. Second, the front button placket, which runs from the collar to the waist and creates a long, lean line. Third, the structured shoulder, which holds its shape whether you stand, sit or dance through a sangeet night. Together these details make the bandhgala more formal than a Nehru jacket and more distinctive than a western suit. When you want to stand apart at an event without effort, this is the jacket that does the work for you.
Jacquard bandhgalas. - Woven patterns add texture without loud colour. The pattern sits inside the weave, so it shifts with the light rather than shout for attention. Our dark navy and black jacquard bandhgalas suit receptions and evening events where you want depth over flash.
Embroidered bandhgalas - Fine tonal embroidery lifts the fabric and catches light as you move. Choose these for weddings and festive functions where the dress code leans rich. Shades such as beige, light grey, off white and dusky green cover both day and evening events.
Plain bandhgalas.- Solid shades keep the look minimal and let the tailoring speak. A plain bandhgala in light blue, beige or maroon works for a formal dinner, an engagement or a daytime ceremony where clean lines matter more than ornament.
Printed bandhgala - Floral prints in light beige and dark red bring a relaxed, festive mood. Wear one to a mehendi, a haldi or a daytime celebration where the setting allows more play.
Embellished bandhgalas - For the biggest nights, an embellished black bandhgala adds shine without excess. It photographs beautifully under evening light and pairs well with dark trousers.
- Off white and beige - daytime weddings, pujas and engagement ceremonies
- Light blue, dusky green and grey - cocktail evenings and daytime receptions
- Dark navy and black - receptions, formal dinners and award functions
- Maroon and dark red - sangeet nights and festive dinners
- Pastel purple - a fresh pick for wedding guests who want to stand out
Keep one rule in mind: darker shades carry evening events, lighter shades own the day. If you attend several functions across a wedding week, one dark and one light bandhgala cover almost every slot.
Weddings - Grooms and groomsmen reach for embroidered or jacquard styles in rich shades. Wedding guests do well with plain or printed bandhgalas that respect the couple without competition.
Sangeet and reception nights - Pick dark navy, black or maroon with texture or shine. These rooms run on evening light, and deeper shades hold their presence in photographs.
Festive occasions - Diwali dinners, pujas and family gatherings call for lighter embroidered styles or printed bandhgalas. Comfort matters across long evenings, so the slim yet easy cut earns its place here.
Formal events - A plain bandhgala in navy, black or grey replaces the western suit at award functions, corporate dinners and formal celebrations. Skip the tie, close the collar and you are done.
Wear your bandhgala over a crisp shirt with tailored trousers for a formal event. Swap the shirt for a kurta when the occasion calls for a traditional look. Keep shoes simple: leather loafers or formal shoes finish the outfit, and mojaris work when the event leans ethnic. Add a pocket square for weddings and receptions. For colour, match trousers to the jacket for a suited look, or pick cream and beige trousers to soften a dark jacket at a festive event. Keep accessories minimal. The collar and the cut already carry the outfit, so a watch and a pocket square complete it.
Rare Rabbit bandhgalas follow a slim, contemporary cut. The shoulders sit flat, the collar closes without pull, and the body follows your frame without strain at the buttons. Check the size guide on each product page before you order, and size up if you plan to wear a kurta underneath.
Dry clean jacquard, embroidered and embellished styles to protect the surface work. Hang the jacket on a broad hanger so the shoulders keep their shape, and store it away from direct sunlight between events. Steam light creases instead of a hot iron press, and your bandhgala stays event ready for years.
Discover bandhgalas crafted for refined celebrations, with luxurious fabrics, precise tailoring and sophisticated detailing. Rare Rabbit brings elevated festive dressing within reach, offering a polished designer-inspired look without an excessive occasion-wear premium.
